"Serdica is my Rome." — Constantine the Great, ~316 AD
Constantine the Great — the Roman emperor who founded Constantinople, legalised Christianity, and reorganised the entire known world — wrote of Sofia (then Serdica): "Serdica is my Rome." He seriously considered making it the capital of the Byzantine Empire instead of Constantinople. He built there, held the Council of Sardica (343 AD — one of the most important early Christian assemblies in history), and spent significant time in the city. When today's construction crews dig for the metro, they find Roman ruins. At Serdika station, you can see streets, homes, and bathhouses from that era — enclosed in glass, between the trains.
Sofia is the third oldest European capital after Rome and Athens — and the cheapest capital in the EU by price per square metre of residential property. Athens is 42% more expensive, Bucharest 8% more. Here you have: a metro, an international airport, leading universities, a growing tech sector, and Vitosha mountain 20 minutes from the city centre. The market is growing at 16% annually from a base that still offers genuine value. If you want capital-city quality of life without a capital-city price tag — the answer is in Bulgaria.
