Beneath Stara Zagora lie two worlds that most people don't know about. The first is Neolithic — two perfectly preserved dwellings from 5,600 BC, discovered by chance during construction work. They survived because a sudden fire 7,600 years ago collapsed them inward, sealing everything inside: stone mills, ceramics, hearths. The second world is Roman — Augusta Traiana, the provincial capital of Thrace, whose street grid is still visible today.

When Ottoman forces burned Stara Zagora to the ground on July 19, 1877 after six hours of battle, an Austro-Hungarian architect arrived to survey the ruins — and discovered beneath the ash the perfect Roman street grid. He used it as the foundation for the new city plan. That is why Stara Zagora has a chessboard street layout more precise than most Western European cities — a decision made 150 years ago on top of 2,000-year-old Roman bones.

In late May, the entire city smells of linden blossom. Every boulevard is lined with linden trees, and when they bloom simultaneously the fragrance carries for blocks. Here is the opera house with the largest stage in the Balkans. Here was born Anna Tomova-Sintow, soloist at the leading European opera houses. For real estate: Stara Zagora is arguably the best value for money in Bulgaria — a stable, well-supplied market with accessible prices and a rental yield of 4.6%.
